Demonstrate knowledge and application of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 85 of 1993 (OHSA) (as amended) and the responsibilities of management in terms of the Act

This course is intended for all managers who should know the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and the consequences of non-compliance. It will be useful for managers at all levels as well as safety and security officers, compliance officers and learners in commercial and industrial insurance.

The qualifying learner is capable of:

  • Explaining the basic principles of the Act and accompanying Regulations.
  • Explaining the requirements for minimum compliance stipulated in the Act.
  • Interpreting the management controls required to achieve compliance.
  • Explaining the obligations of managers in terms of communication and training.
  • Entry requirements:

    • Communication at NQF Level 3
    • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3



    Describe the functions of the workplace health and safety representative

    On completion of this course you will understand the objectives and statutory requirements pertaining to health and safety in the workplace. Learners will be able to explain the rights, powers, functions and duties of the workplace health and safety representative and how any errant health, safety and environmental issues may be handled; and will also be able to participate in the safety, health and environmental structures and measure these activities according to health, safety and environmental requirements.

    The qualifying learner is capable of:

    • Describing the framework of workplace health and safety legislation pertaining to health and safety representatives.
    • Explaining the specified requirements to conduct safety, health and environmental representation activities at a working place.
    • Addressing safety, health and environment related issues within their scope of authority.
    • Complying with the activities within safety, health and environmental structures.

    Entry requirements:

    • Communication at NQF Level 1 or equivalent.
    • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 1 or equivalent.



    Conduct an investigation into workplace safety, health and environmental incidents

    On completion of this course you will be able to identify and explain the legal and organisational-specific requirements regulating the reporting and investigation of workplace incidents. Learners will be able to complete the required reports and be able to process any physical evidence which may have been collected.

    The qualifying learner is capable of:
    • Describing requirements for workplace safety, health and environment incident investigation.
    • Gathering information for workplace safety, health and environment incident investigations.
    • Conducting post-investigation activities.
